Overview
The course is based upon hands-on and theoretical learning. Students
will learn to install, terminate and test fibre-optic cable within
data communications systems. With the integration of fibre optical
technology into Networks, CCTV and traffic systems, and this comprehensive
course provides you with the technical knowledge and skills to carry
out all types of Fibre Installation and Testing.

Modules are split into the following groups:
Module 1
Follow Recommended Installation Procedures
You will:
· Check the cable and components before installation
· Check the correct cable laying procedures are followed
· Test laid cable before jointing/termination
You will learn:
· Single Mode optical fibres as step index
· Fibre specifications and parameters
· Fibre and cable inspection test methods and documentation
· Use of components · Use of equipment for installation
· Requirements for checking cable and components
· Methods and means to follow work plans and instructions
· Safe working and efficiency when undertaking installation
· Testing of laid cable before jointing/termination
Module 2
Prepare Fibre Optic Cable for Fibre Splicing
You will:
· Prepare cable for splicing
· Prepare coated fibre for splicing
You will learn:
· Characteristics of cables as indoor/outdoor/universal
· Basic constructional features of Single Mode fibre cable
and coatings
· Selection and correct use of cable cutting and stripping
tools
· Purpose and use of fibre cleaning materials and techniques
· Rules for efficiency and special precautions to be observed
when carrying out preparation
Module 3
Joint and Terminate Fibre Optic Cables by Splicing
You will:
· Set up working environment for outdoor cable jointing
· Prepare bare fibre for splicing · Splice fibres
using fusion splice techniques
· Splice fibres using mechanical splice techniques
· Organise cables, tubes and fibres into joint housing
· Seal joint enclosure
You will learn:
· The requirements for an efficient and effective cable
jointing environment
· Working principles of splicing · Use of fibre
cleaving tools
· Possible causes of faults in cleaving
· Correct use of splice equipment according to range and
application
· Potential problems when undertaking splicing and identify
causes
· Performance requirements of splices for typical telecoms
and cable TV applications
· Correct use of splice management and protection systems
and procedures for working with high fibre cables
· Sealing and cable retention methods for enclosure systems
· Rules for efficiency and special precautions for splicing
Module 4
Test Fibre Optic Links
You will:
· Test fibre continuity using a visible light source
· Test link performance using an infra-red lightand power
meter
· Test link performance using OTDR techniques
You will learn:
· The range of test methods and the purposeof testing
· Correct use and principles of operation of test equipment
· Use of testing equipment and procedures
· Application and operation of an OTDR
· The procedures for testing and test conditions
· Application and operation of test equipment toprevent
sources of error
· To recognise acceptable link and component performance
and appropriate documentation
· General rules for efficiency and specialprecautions to
be observed for testing.
